“Atlas Shrugged” is Revived by the Recession

Check it out right here.

Of course this article caught my attention… since I’m an aspiring author and all. Basically, this article is saying that Ayn Rand’s classic novel has seen a new surge in popularity, mostly due to our current economic situation. Many people are picking up the book- either for the first time or as a return to an old friend- and noting the many similarities between her novel and the current recession. The most notable parallels:

  • The government taking over the banks
  • The government (kind of) taking control of the automobile industry
  • A president who fires the CEO of a major corporation

Interesting stuff, no? Shades of George Orwell spookiness. Prophecy or coincidence? Who can say. I think that sometimes, authors are so in tune with the world surrounding them, with people and their “secret” motives, that they can often “predict” various scenarios. Eerie, though, when life begins to imitate art.

My workplace, in the meantime, has taken the form of Animal Farm- but that’s a story for later.
