Vendor Who Sold Racist Obama Pin Apologizes

June 18th, 2008 · No Comments

As reported by The Dallas Morning News.

So basically, the vendor responsible for selling the racist merchandise has apologized.

“It’s just been crazy,” said Jonathan Alcox, who runs republicanmarket.com and had buttons and other items for sale at the GOP gathering. “The point is we made a mistake. I realize that now. And I apologize.”

The Republican Party of Texas announced today that it will donate to charity the $1,500 it received for leasing the booth to Mr. Alcox. The offending pin stated: “If Obama is president…Will we still call it the White House?”

…Um.

How can you even conceptualize this slogan, create lots of these buttons, and sell them without stopping to think that maybe, just maybe, you’ve made a gross mistake that will raise a lot of eyebrows? To be blunt, that’s pretty stupid. Especially when it comes to politics. Let’s be honest: in this game, we must stop and think about what we’re going to say before we stand up and say it.

As a Republican friend of mine pointed out, things like this are really not conducive to the spirit of unity that’s supposed to be present at conventions.

Well, I suppose we can look at the bright side: $1,500.00 will be donated to charity. Still, you’d think the Republican party could up the ante a little, in the spirit of avoiding any additional negative press. Small price to pay, really.
